          Gordon Joseph Hermes, 85, Escanaba, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on Monday January 18, 2016 at his home. He was born on July 27, 1930 in Escanaba, the son of the late William L. and Lucille M. (Perow) Hermes. On June 20, 1953 he married the former Dolores Marmalick who preceded him in death in 2011.
 
          Gordon served his country in the U.S. Army and is a Korean War Veteran. He served on the St. Joseph Church parish council, was a 10 year board member at Holy Name School and President of the board for 4 years. Gordon received outstanding young man of the year in the Gogebic County Jaycees, served on the Escanaba city council for 2 terms, was the Executive Director of Lakestate Industries and sat on the board of directors for the Delta Area Transit Authority (DATA), and owned and operated Gambles Hardware Store. In his later years he loved going to camp with his good buddies and playing cribbage with anyone who dared to challenge him.
 
          Gordon was a leader in his church, community and to his family. He was an inspiration to his children and all who had the pleasure of crossing his path. He made it his business to know everyone and everything as he made his mark on Escanaba and throughout Delta County.
 
          He is survived by five children: Peter (Carol) Hermes, LuAnn (Paul) Hay, Christine (Mike Lukasik) Hermes, William Hermes and Sara (Ed) Flath, one sister: Lois (Paul) O'Neill, thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
 
          Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter: Mary Richardson and one brother: Fr. Sam Hermes.
 
          Friends may call from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday January 21, 2016 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba with Delta County Veterans Council rites at 2:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Parish with Fr. Glenn Theoret officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church parish hall. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.

  • "What a wonderful guy he was. I sure enjoyed many good conversations with him and your mom. He was "my breakfast buddy" at Elmer's and was a shoulder for me to lean on during my troubled times.
