Harold L. Plouff
Harold L. Plouff, 87, Escanaba, passed away on Thursday May 4, 2023 at his home with his loving family by his side.
The son of Arthur and Lillian (LaFave) Plouff, Harold was born in Flat Rock, MI on April 1, 1936. He attended Escanaba Area High School and was a member of the “Class of 1954”. After graduation, he moved to Detroit, MI where he worked as a mechanic and later to Milwaukee, WI where he attended trade school. That education led Harold to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Escanaba Division where he worked as a draftsman, retiring in 1983 after 25 years of dedicated service. He was a man of strong faith and a member of St. Thomas Church.
On July 16, 1983 he married the love of his life Carol Jean Smith at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Escanaba and became not only a husband but a loving stepfather to three children.
Harold liked to build things. He designed and built two lovely homes on Portage Point and a hunting camp in Watson, MI. He loved spending hours in his workshop and was always fixing or building something. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved riding his snowmobile and ATVs. One of his greatest joys was deer season at camp, first with his father and later with his younger brother.
Harold was also a devoted Packer fan who rarely missed a game. In later years, he developed a passion for building jigsaw puzzles and built hundreds of them. Several are displayed in the couple’s home.
He especially loved being a Grandpa to his two beloved grandchildren, Chad and Rylie. They made many wonderful memories together that will be cherished always.
Harold is survived by his wife, Carol, Stepchildren: Kim (Dean) Francis, Kevin Lake of Escanaba, and Dennis Lake of Tampa, FL. Grandchildren: Chad Francis of Indianapolis, IN and Rylie Francis of Escanaba. A sister, Betty (Sid) Premo of Sun City, AZ and his beloved brother Donald (Cynthia) Plouff of Indianapolis, IN. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Gloria Batho and Sharon Lawrence of Sault Ste. Marie, MI along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Florence (Lu) Plouff of Cornell, MI.
Friends may call from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday May 11, 2023 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Fr. Rick Courier officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church parish hall. Harold will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
