Irene M. DeShambo
, 93, Escanaba, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday April 19, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital. She was born on February 20, 1918 in Wells to the late Exilda (Guilbault) and Fred Gardner. She attended school in Wells. Irene was united in marriage to Earl DeShambo (the love of her life) in 1933 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

The couple lived in Arnold, Gwinn, and Escanaba prior to building their home in Gross where they resided throughout their 64 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1997. For the past 5 years Irene resided in an apartment at the Bishop Noa home.

Irene is survived by her only child, Joan (Clifford) Mattson of Escanaba; one grandson, Rory (Diane) Mattson of Escanaba; two granddaughters, Jodi (Tim) Turek of Sugar Grove, IL, Traci (Rob) Rosenbaum of Hanover, NH; five great grandchildren, Krista Mattson of Mesa, AZ, Jacob, Mattson, and Hazel Rosenbaum, and Clark Turek; one great-great grandchild Caydon Mattson; many nieces and nephews including her special chums Jacob, Johnny, and Casey.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 8 brothers.

Irene was employed at Solar Manufacturing Company and as a bartender for 35 years at the Buck Inn. She made many long and lasting friendships during those years.

An MSVP volunteer for many years, Irene was involved with the programs at Christian Park, St. Vincent de Paul, and the handicapped program, helping with bowling and the Special Olympics. Irene was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. She enjoyed traveling with her friends and family and one of her greatest passions was dancing, especially with her husband, they loved dancing together throughout their marriage.

Friends and family may call at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday April 25, 2011. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 6:00 p.m. on Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock with Fr. Jose Maramattam officiating. A meal will be served in the Fr. Matt Hall following Mass. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
