Magdalyn "Delaine" Frances (Becker) Bishop, Escanaba, went home to be with her Lord on Holy Thursday, April 6, 2023. She passed peacefully at the age of 92 at North Woods Place Assisted Living, her home for the past several years. She was born in Moran, MI on May 4, 1930 daughter of the late Eldred and Gertrude (Gill) Becker of St. Ignace, she is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Michael Joseph "Joe" Bishop.
Delaine attended the early grades in the Moran public school system and finished her education at the Ursuline Academy in St. Ignace and graduated in 1948. Her family moved to St. Ignace where was employed at the First National Bank. She met her husband in 1951 and the couple were married in the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace. After her husband Joe completed his first stint in the Army the couple moved to Marquette where Michael graduated from N.M.U. and where they raised their family of seven children. Six of their children graduated from Northern Michigan University. One son, Joseph received special schooling from the Marquette – Alger school system, and graduated in 1986.
The family lived on West Fair Avenue in Marquette and were some of the first members of St. Christopher parish. Delaine loved music and was a member of the choir for most of her 30 years in Marquette. She liked traveling and enjoyed many winter months on the Gulf Cost of Florida with Joe and their son Joey. One of the highlights of her life was a pilgrimage she took to Croatia, visiting the shrine in Medjugorje. Delaine and her husband worked for and supported Special Olympics. They and their family attended many Special Olympic events and were proud to see Joseph greatly enjoy being a “hot dog” at these events.
She is survived by her seven children: Kathleen (Jim) McCarthy, David, Mary (Mark) Ruge, Timothy (Julie), Bob, Susan and Joseph ‘Joey’, one sister: Joan Altman, three brothers: James "Sonny" Becker, Richard "Dickie" (Margaret) Becker and Bill (Cathy) Becker. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Timothy, Max and Mia Ruge, Anna and Michael Bishop, Lily and Michael Valenti and two great-grandchildren, Juliette Newcombe and Cole Ruge. Delaine also enjoyed the company of bonus grandchildren Ben (Jennifer) Blixt, Nathan (Ingrid) Blixt and their families.
Delaine was preceded in death by her parents and a brother: Randy Becker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph & St. Patrick parish on Saturday April 15, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Most Rev. Timothy Ferguson presiding and Fr. Robb Jurkovich concelebrating. A Rosary will be said in the church at 12:15 and a luncheon will follow Mass in the church parish hall. Delaine will be laid to rest next to her husband in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery later this spring.
