William "Bill" Russell Sutherland

William "Bill" Russell Sutherland, 80, Hermansville, passed away on Saturday February 11, 2012 in Indiana following a battle with cancer. He was born on February 19, 1931 in Escanaba, the son of the late Irwin and Irene (Gereau) Sutherland. On July 9, 1955 he married the former Betty Carron in Norway, MI.

After graduating from high school, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving one year in Korea, one year in Japan and two years in Dover, Delaware, where he achieved the rank of E5. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking, but most importantly to him, was spending time with all his family.

Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, four children: Nonda (Todd) Henshaw, William B. (Anna Marie) Sutherland, Lee (Elizabeth) Sutherland and Stephen (Alana) Sutherland, one brother: Robert (Dorothy) Sutherland, two sisters: Iva (Walter) Love and Genieve (Leroy) Floriano, nine grandchildren: Andrew, Faith, Katherine, Matthew, Jennifer, Emily, Bradley, Daniel and Adam, two great-grandchildren: Aliyya and Charlotte, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Irwin Sutherland Jr. and three sisters: Myrtle Freese, Elaine Gardipee and Grace Hayes.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Wednesday February 15, 2012 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church (N3770 Pine Mountain Road, Iron Mountain, MI 49801). A funeral service will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Wednesday at the church with Pastor Jim Nephew and Pastor Jess Nephew officiating. A luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba.
