Charles L. Schmidt III, 93, Escanaba, died Saturday June 25, 2011. He was born on November 23, 1917 in Escanaba, the son of the late Charles and Clara (Sillers) Schmidt II. On October 7, 1947 he married the late and former Betty Liedl at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Escanaba.
He was a 1935 graduate of Escanaba High School and attended Northern Michigan University after serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1946 Charles began working for the city of Escanaba and retired as the City Assessor in 1980.
Charles is survived by one son: Charles (Toni Lori) Schmidt IV of Spread Eagle, WI, three daughters: Ann (James) Kurtz of Rancho Cordova, CA, Jane Schmidt of Ft. Collins, CO and Mary (Daniel) Breitzman of New London, WI, eleven grandchildren: Charles and Todd Schmidt, Jeffrey, Susan and Eric Kurtz, Ehrin, Mica and Kiley Graim, Jeremy, Clint and Troy Breitzman as well as great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters: Lois Petaja and Rita Kelly and two brothers: Robert and William Schmidt.
There will be a private memorial service held at a later date. Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery next to his wife.
