John I. Kobasic,
89, Escanaba, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday December 4, 2010 at his home. He was born on May 9, 1921 in Escanaba, the son of the late Frank and Ella (Siminic) Kobasic Sr. On June 22, 1949 he married the former and late Corabell Schoen in Chicago, IL.

John proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945 receiving a Bronze Star for his bravery in WWII. He worked numerous jobs throughout his life, but really loved carpentry work and working in the woods. In his younger years, he loved spending time at family parties, having lamb roasts, playing his guitar and singing and playing horseshoes. He also loved gardening and doing his firewood. John was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Mr. Kobasic was survived by three children: Marty (Dennis) Verbrigghe, Frances Gravelle and John J. (Karen) Kobasic, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his barber: Tony, his chauffer: Jake, as well as many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers: Frank Jr., Peter and Steve Kobasic and five sisters: Mary Stropich, Rose Derkos, Anne Blagec, Katherine Hickman and Frances Kobasic.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday December 10, 2010 at Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba with the Delta County Veterans Council Rites at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Fr. Rick Courier officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the Spring.

John's family would like to extend a special thank you to all the emergency first responders for all their compassionate understanding and help.
