Josephine H. Zajkoski, 93, Lansing, formerly of Escanaba, MI, passed away September 2, 2013 at Sparrow Hospice House of Mid Michigan in Lansing, MI. She was born March 19, 1920 in Hyde, MI to Mr. and Mrs. Karol (Theresa) Zajkoski.
 
            Josephine graduated from Escanaba Senior High School in 1937; from Cloverland Commercial College in Escanaba in 1938, and from Michigan State University in 1978. As a Federal Civil Service employee, Josephine worked with the U.S. military most of her 30 years: for the Michigan Selective Service System, Michigan State Adjutant General's Office, and continuing in that civilian status for the Department of the Army overseas in Japan and Europe to include France, Germany, Belgium (SHAPE), and finally with the Department of the Air Force stateside at the Strategic Air Command, Omaha, Nebraska, retiring at the end of May 1975.
 
            The early years of her retirement were not without much activity. She had attended classes at Michigan State College which were begun in 1951. She availed herself during her employment in France and Germany of Courses offered to the U.S. military by the University of Maryland. Thus she obtained her Bachelor of Social Science degree in 1978 at MSU, much to the consternation of the MSU Clerk thinking his computer was awry.
 
            Next came travels in search of genealogical and historical documents in Poland and the East Coast pertaining to family history which became her pet projects with much success.
 
            Lastly, her greatest project of 13 years was caring for her sister Vanda who was in a bedfast condition.
 
            Josephine was predeceased by her father in July of 1930 and her mother in November of 1967. She also suffered the loss of her two sisters: Vanda Zajkoski in June of 2003 and Mary (Zajkoski) Wos in August 2003.
 
            Surviving are her twin nieces: Irene and Lorraine Wos, of Lansing, MI, nephew Richard (Cathy) Wos and their children: Richard  Jr., Megan and Whitney WOs of Escanaba, as well as distant relatives in Poland and some in the United States.
 
            Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday September 5, 2013 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home (400 S. 10th St. Escanaba, MI 49829). A combined funeral service and memorial service to celebrate the lives of Josephine and Vanda Zajkoski will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with family speaking about both sisters. Interment will follow services in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Escanaba, at which time the cremains of Vanda will also be interred.
 
            Josephine said that to detail her work and travel experiences would be a case of "been there, done that" as evidenced by her many letters and postcards sent to family, relatives and friends. To the many who enriched the lives of Vanda and Josephine, a heartfelt thank you. You know who you are! Here and in the beyond.
