Lois Ann Whitens
Date of Death: June, 19 2022

Lois Ann Whitens, 82, Hermansville, passed away peacefully on Sunday June 19, 2022 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers. She was born March 17, 1940 in Spalding, daughter of the late Lawrence and Gladys (LaCosse) Murray. Lois graduated from Powers-Spalding High School in 1958, and married her loving and devoted husband: Robert "Bob" J. Whitens on July 19, 1958 at St. Francis Xavier Church and together raised their five children.

She was a member of St. John Neumann church in Hermansville, where she was part of the St. Anne's Society. Throughout her life she volunteered for many church and school activities, and proudly completed a CNA nursing training program. Lois was a dedicated homemaker, spending time perfecting many talents such as sewing, knitting and cooking. She always had something on the stove or in the oven, and there were always leftovers to be handed out. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke with others.

Together, Lois and Bob spent their days keeping busy outdoors. They worked in their large garden and canned many of their vegetables and made jams, jellies and maple syrup. They looked forward to their yearly crop of sweet corn, and Lois always had beautiful flowers around their home. Lois enjoyed going for rides in the woods, and even took an interest in Bob's trapping. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed listening to the Whitens Brothers Band, playing cards and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A fond memory was a trip to Hawaii where she shared laughs with her sister and cousin while watching the ocean waves and took in the beautiful flowers and greenery. Lois was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be greatly missed by so many.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, four daughters: Debbie (Kim) Recla of Iron Mountain, MI, Natalie (Peter) Folcik of Powers, MI, Cindy (Joe) Kinsella of Almond, WI and Melissa (Tim) Mattson of Wrightstown, WI, one son: Robert (Peg) Whitens of Quinnesec, MI, two siblings: Lawrence Murray and Sharon Neveau, grandchildren: Johnathan Recla and Jennifer Recla, Aaron (Beatriz) Folcik, Katie Folcik, Joe (Sara) Kinsella, Dan (Rachel) Kinsella, Samantha Whitens, and Drew and Maggie Mattson, great-grandchildren: Alex, Jackie, Santi, Sophia, Ruthie, Joey and Gracie, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon) (CST) on Friday June 24, 2022 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Spalding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday at St. John Neumann Church in Spalding with Fr. Benny Mathew officiating. Lois will be laid to rest after Mass in the Meyer Township Cemetery and a luncheon will follow in the church parish hall in Spalding.

Her family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and care staff at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility for their caring of Lois over the past five years.

  • "To all of Lois' family and friends, we send our condolences. Lois was a class mate of mine, we went to school from Kindergarten thru High School Graduation. I will never forget in Home Ec Class, we all made corduroy dusters (Fare Coats, definitely a 50's fashion) and Lois made hers. However, the pinwale in the back, one piece went one way and the other a different way. We just looked at Lois and did not say anything then the teacher said "Is something wrong?" We still did not say anything and then Lois started to laugh and we all roared. She really did laugh a lot and I am so pleased that she had a happy family and life. Sue Brierley "
