Robert "Bob" J. Mathias

          Robert "Bob" J. Mathias, 90, Powers, passed away on Saturday February 19, 2022 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, WI, with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 14, 1932 in Banat, MI, son of the late John and Janet (Palzewicz) Mathias. On January 28, 1956 he married the former JoAnne Meintz in Stephenson, MI.
 
          Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 to1954 and 1956 to 1960, serving during the Korean War. He served in the 57th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron Medium Weather (MATS), 551st Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing (ADC) and was part of Operation Castle, Atomic Test at Eniwetok Proving Grounds, Marshall Islands, Bikini Atoll and was an Atomic Veteran. He was a life time member of Tony Revord American Legion Post# 244, member of  DAV, NAAV Atomic Veteran and Air Weather, Normenco Sportsman Club and also Saint John Neumann Catholic Church. One of the highlights of his life was going on the U.P. Honor Flight.
 
          After he was honorably discharged for the United States Air Force, he worked in Kenosha, WI at AMC and then as a United States Postman.  He and JoAnne then moved back to Upper Michigan where he worked at Harnischfeger Corporation until it's closure. He started his own Logging Company, B&T Logging with his friend Tom and son Bart. This led into a job at Champion Paper where he worked in the wood yard until his retirement in 1995.
          Bob was an avid reader, he loved to play golf from spring to late fall and enjoyed watching Golf, Football and Baseball.  Bob enjoyed going to Camp that he built with his sons and riding his four-wheeler.
          Survived by his wife, children: Robert Jeffery Mathias, Loretta (Daniel) Lewis, Lelia (Bryan) Crawford, Bart G Mathias and Lisa (Dennis) Hansen.  grandchildren Angeline (Devin)Thompson, Nathan Lewis, Nicholas (Justine) Mathias, Jennifer (Adam) Linssen, Katie Breslin and Torie Breslin, great-grandchildren: Imogene and Franklin Mathias, siblings: Dave (Sharon) Mathias, Francis Mathias,  Rosie (Allan) Webber, Cynthia (Don) Mann, sisters-in-law: Lois Mohr, Sharon Mathias, Janet Menitz and Cheryl Mathias, as well as many nieces and nephews.
 
          Bob was preceded in death by:  an infant son: Stewart Mathias, brothers: Carl (Sandy) Mathias, Ronald Mathias, John Mathias, brothers- in- law: Dennis Meintz, Warren Meintz and Raymond Mohr.
 
          Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday February 24, 2022 at St. John Neumann Church in Spalding with Tony Revord American Legion Post #244 rites at 3:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday at church with Fr. Benny Mathew officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church parish hall. Burial will take place in the Spalding Township Cemetery in the spring.
 
          In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to any American  Legion Post for Flags, or the UP Honor Flight.
 
          The Allo Coolman Funeral Homes are assisting the Mathias family.
